Quick Fix / Temporary Stabilization

Postby johnleeke » Thu Jun 17, 2021 6:42 pm

Sometimes the best durable work cannot be done because there is not enough time, or money. Maybe all the best window specialists are booked out months in advance.
I have a whole series of temporary stabilization treatments that I use, are low cost, quick, easy to reverse, and don't cause problems for future repairs. Here are some of them.

Cracked Glass: Seal one or both sides with clear UV-resistant thick packing tape, lasts 2-3 years. Use repair tape for inflatable greenhouses for 5-8 year service life.

Sill Decay Pockets: Seal with blue masking tape and two coats of paint, service life 3-5 years.

Weak Sash Joint: Screw on an "L"-plate. See Save America's Windows page 34 for step-by-step, materials & tools.

Limited Peeling Paint: Spot Paint Maintenance. See Window Preservation Standards book, page 80, for the standard. Service life: 10-20 years.
