Limiting weather checks on sills until I can restore them.

Postby p_scofield » Wed Apr 23, 2014 6:03 pm

Hi from the Rockies!

I have 23 double hung wood windows that exhibit varying degrees of weather checking on the sills. Since I will not be able to restore them all at one time, I am hoping for some ideas on how to return some degree of moisture into the wood until such time I can deal with each window.

There is no cracking per se, but you can tell by the ridges in the sills that it is not far off. Recommendations would be most appreciated!

Many thanks.

Paul, welcome to the Forum!

The ridges in the top surface of the sills could be normal weathering of the wood, where the softer early-growth of the annual rings weathers away leaving the harder late-growth wood.

Any type of liquid you apply to the wood surface now might limit more effective treatments later on. If there are no actual cracks or splits in the wood, applying a consolidating oil resin pre-treatment might be good. More info on that here: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=5203

If you could attach a couple of photos to a message here we might be able to tell more about what is going on and how susceptible they might be to cracking and weather-checks, and come up with an effective treatment.
